Why Does Grief Feel So Overwhelming?

Long-standing grief is rarely about a single event.

It is often the cumulative impact of loss, trauma, caregiving, disappointments, lost futures, and major life changes.

Over time, sorrow can accumulate.

When there is too much grief and too little support around it, sorrow can begin to overwhelm our coping strategies.

This is often when chronic exhaustion, diminished capacity, and a dulling of our life force energy begin to take hold.

What Is Capacity?

Capacity is the amount of emotional, physical, relational, and nervous system space we have available to meet life, stress, and sorrow.

Grief requires a great deal of capacity.

It moves through the body, the nervous system, the mind, the heart, our relationships, and our daily lives.

When grief is layered, cumulative, or intertwined with trauma, it can gradually consume more of our available capacity.

And when new losses arrive before previous grief has had the support it needs, the burden can become even greater.

Workshop Details

Space for Sorrow is a live online workshop exploring grief, overwhelm, capacity, and support through a holistic and trauma-informed lens.

Because grief affects the whole person, support for grief must also involve the whole person.

Together, we'll explore why grief becomes overwhelming, how capacity becomes diminished, and practical ways of creating more support around sorrow.
